Rihanna 80s Style

While I may hate the vile music that came out of the 80s (here's looking at you Beverly Hills Cop), I have to say the fashion is TOO MUCH FUN. It's so ironic and horribly tacky, but within it's own bizarre twisted framework it actually works. Rihanna is one of the few celebrities I have seen pull off the 80s look and this is probably due to the fact that she is a rock star. When I previously said "bizarre twisted framework" what I actually meant was "on a rock star" or "at a theme party". THOSE ARE THE ONLY TIMES IT WORKS. Unless you're a model, and then everything just works on you all the time and the rest of us secretly hate you for it.

If you are a rock star, heading to a theme party, or a cursed model, then take note of the fabulous styles above you may draw inspiration from: shoulder-padded over-sized blazers (once referred to as "power dressing" *barf*), leotards and dance wear, crazy mofo hair, washed out denim, leopard and houndstooth print, designer sneakers and tennis shoes, anything "punk" or "metal head" esque, and over-sized questionable sweaters.

Fashion On Screen Part 2

It only took me one and a half years, but here it is! The follow up posting to Fashion On Screen Part 1. This post seems to have been a hit as it drives the most traffic to my ever-so-neglected blog. The thing with law school is it takes all the time you have and then some. However, this semester I am resigned to being a below average student so here is a post I should have dedicated to Property Law readings.

We love our bread, we love our butter, but most of all we love berets! If you ever find yourself craving some very stereotypical French dressing then this is the film for you replete with scarves worn in every fashion imaginable and sweet collars that will remind you of the preppy innocence of Madeline.

Carol Ramsey, who most recently wardrobed Horrible Bosses, was the costumer designer for this film and she definitely won me over with this one. From the frivolous lingerie Kate Hudson sports to the simple and romantic blouses littered throughout the entire cast, it is quite difficult not to fall in love with the very romantic styling.

My favorite look of the film was Kate Hudson's chocolate brown suit that not-so-secretly contained a pink corset underneath. This look was worn for a midday seduction of Kate's older French gentleman friend with whom she has an affair with. The juxtaposition of a suit with lingerie is a bit common now, yet still carries novelty every time I see it.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" number, which sold at auction in 1999 for an astounding $1,267,500.

I've always had a soft spot for gold diggers and I think it's because of this film. For those of you who have never seen Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, it revolves around Marilyn Monroe, "Lorelei Lee", a sex bomb looking for a wealthy husband. Of course Marilyn could never play a cold and calculating gold digger. That would just be silly. Instead she plays a delightful, and charming woman who truly wants to find love, but with the prerequisite of a very large bank balance. Marilyn argues at one point to a skeptical man "Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You might not marry a girl just because she's pretty, but my goodness, doesn't it help?" Sounds like impenetrable logic to me.

Charles LeMaire Travilla was the costume designer for this film and designed my favorite dress of the film, the wildly famous pink ballroom gown number. If you've never seen this scene of the movie you really, really must!

I will likely do another one of these Fashion on Screen posts for my favorite Sex and the City looks and some other fashionable films. Feel free to make some request as our tastes my coincide :)

There is actually a surprising dearth of school girl themed editorials out there. I know because I googled the world wide web for like 4 hours one evening trying to find a few, and all I found was Miranda Kerr's vaguely pornographic catholic editorial. In light of this fact I am going to make a mental note to do a creative sometime this upcoming summer that's education themed. I feel like this is a theme I could really bring to life seeing as I never seem to leave school, at least not for long.

Right now I am in exam hell. I would rather do almost anything than write an exam, including the following items:

1. Sit in a pool of pig blood

2. Take part in a Roman-style orgy with cats

3. Stock soup cans all day at a Walmart supercentre

4. Bark out my window at passerby's

5. Listen to smooth jazz Nyan cat for 5 hours straight

wait....who am I kidding? I love Nyan cat! I would do that any day.

I've always been way too fond of looking all proper and such to pull off any Sweet Child O' Mine look, but I definitely enjoy when Pam rocks my Fbook newsfeed. Rock on dudette.

Joy to the world it's that time of the month again. Yay!

It's not December yet, but Holt Renfrew nor the rest of the retail world cares. I know some people get annoyed when holidays are forced upon them way in advance, but I welcome the marketing onslaught.

I know I'm a broke student. I've come to terms with the fact I cannot afford a holiday shopping spree. A Marc Jacobs party dress is so far removed from my reality that the whole idea of getting upset over not having one is ridiculous. Therefore, merchandising displays are my friends (even when torment ensues, they're still my friends).

These windows are a bit more traditional as opposed to Holt's more wacky and abstract displays, but I suppose we can tone things down a bit for Christmas, although in general-screw toning things down a bit. Leave that dirty work to Kate Middleton and Hilary Clinton.

Last year on this very day I made some suggestions for those out there who get the glory of experiencing all four seasons. This year I feel compelled to post pictures from only one blogger who has clearly mastered layering. This girl needs to do a commercial for Trident Layers gum or J.Crew or both!

As a law student I am particularly fond of these looks as most are still polished enough to be considered business casual. My theory is any outfit that makes use of a crispy blouse or well cut blazer is automatically turned to gold (side note: have popped collars ever looked this good????).

Cheers to another season of bundling up with light fabrics before reaching for a heavy coat!

Do it Yourself: Newspaper Nails

Don't judge this DIY project based on my nails. I did this after a few drinks (this project is THAT easy). They can turn out darker and with more clarity when given more attentiveness.

Step 1: Nail Polish.

I used a base coat from OPI to promote a longer lasting manicure, along with OPI's Alpine Snow, and a top coat from OPI as well. It's just a coincidence my polishes here are all from OPI, because I pledge my allegiance to no one nail polish brand. I.LOVE.THEM.ALL. (except Sally Hansen).

The top coat goes on after the newspaper print so after you do a couple coats of white hold off on that step.

Step 2: Newspaper.

Cut out your favorite section of the newspaper. If you're any bit as nutty as me you'll go straight for the horoscopes (why is Mars semi-sextile with Jupiter again this month??! So totally annoying.).

Step 3: Rubbing alcohol.

This is how to make the magic happen. After your white polish has dried, put a piece of your newspaper (cut slightly larger than your nails) over a nail. Apply rubbing alcohol over until wet. I use a Q-tip, but anything that will absorb and distribute the rubbing alcohol will work.

Hold the newspaper very still, and stroke over top fairly hard so it comes off in the same place and darkly. You'll develop some technique after a few nails so don't worry too much about it initially. Make sure to apply the top coat afterwards otherwise the print will come right off.

And voilà Newspaper Nails :)

Oh, knotted shirts! Where do I begin? You bring me back to Christina Ricci duck tapping her boobs in Now and Then and Kurt Cobain being a hot mess before hot mess was even a term. You're basically all sorts of edgy do-it-yourself fun and I don't even have to wait for retailers to stock up on you because you can be easily created with any button down and two hands. Actually you can even use any loose t-shirt for this look (take a looksie below). How rad can you get? I should have seen this one coming with all the cropped turtlenecks and plaid flocking the streets these days.

What I really like about this look is the updated high waisted take on it celebs like Annalynne McCord and Kiera Knightley are trying. It's some sort of mutt mix of 70s and 90s. Radness my friends. Radness.

Blake Lively + Lorraine Schwartz = BFF?

Okay, so lately I have noticed Blake wearing a lot of jewelry, and I mean a lot. Even lil' Jon and rappers everywhere with their retarded bling are like "damn gurl! wassup!?" that is if they could pronounce vowels. Anyways, Blake. Bling. What be happenin'? Well it turns out the majority of the jewelery that has been lent out to Blake has come from CDFA member/designer Lorraine Schwartz.

Late last year Blake attended the designer's launch party for her 2BHAPPY collection, not to be outshone of course by her Diamond Monkey collection, and I suppose a mutually beneficial relationship was forged. No, Lorraine is not Blake's Sugar Mama, she just gives her sparkly stuff when she struts red, fuzzy ground.

I know what you're wondering. How much is one of those bracelets worth? Let me tell you:

Okay, maybe your life is worth more than one of them, but NOT the entire arm party. No way man. Typically when jewelry designers loan out their goods it's only for 24 hours and a security officer is assigned to ~~stalk them their entire evening~~ accompany them to their event and after parties, after which they are collected the very same night. On occasion they are gifted to the celebrity if the jewelry designer is a generous type. I agree with this practice as it prevents people like Lindsay Lohan from committing felony grand theft. I mean, can you blame the girl? Everyone knows you don't inject yourself with heroin in front of a junkie. Why would you give a girl diamonds and then take them away? EVIL.

I'm not particularly charming when I have to blow my nose every 3 minutes and my voice sounds more frog than human. I had the best intentions though when I picked my Italy themed outfit in honor of our Roman God themed bar. My purse is from Florence and my dress reminds me of Italy's flag.

Since I went to the trouble of showering and getting dolled up I figured I might as well make a blog post of it. Thanks Alex, my lovely new photographer, for humoring me once again :P

Last night I met with the girls in my book club and ate some delicious French cuisine. For the occasion I wore a pretty elegant dress I found in Europe and some boots I had delivered that morning (there's actually a big bow in the front of the dress and a crinoline layer you can't make-out with this lighting unfortunately).

Although mixing soft and tough pieces has now become one of the oldest tricks in the book, I still enjoy advocating it. The key to it is contrast and balance. You want textures that will distinctly identify the individual pieces so they each stand out, and you also need to be proportionate so that it is brought together harmoniously. My dress was extra girly so the leather thigh-highs weren't too much to overwhelm the femininity. They were perfect character foils. So awesome.

I like these nylons because they say "I'm elegant and classy yet slightly whorish" which is essentially the message I like to send people. Mixed signals. Keeps em' guessing.

Three things. First, I have amazingly grown 10 inches of hair since you last saw me (lies). Second, I have discovered (and to my utmost dismay) I am hideous in turbans. We were simply not meant to be. It hurts so I won't go into detail. Just know that it hurts...a lot. Third, and most importantly, I am using a new font. It's more reader friendly.

I look forward to regularly updating this blog again and hope to get traffic back up to what it previously was before I took my hiatus.

If I am anything in this world, I am a dreamer. I have been since I was a small child. I was never in tune with my surroundings because I was always lost in my own world. Anyone who knows me personally, knows I leave planet earth at least 10 times a day to contemplate the future. It is just what my mind gravitates towards whether I like it or not. I've read that people daydream 27% of their waking day, so I take some solace in that. This was the first photo shoot I styled and it came more naturally than pooping. True story.

31. Phillip Lim and Viktor & Rolf RTW S/S 2011

Okay, one last post before disappearing for awhile because blogging is one of the few things in life that makes me smile for no reason in particular and those are the best sorts of smiles now aren't they?

Some of the looks that came down the Spring/Summer runways had me questioning just exactly what sort of garment they would be classified as. For example, Phillip Lim's Apron-meets-collar-meets-dress ensemble or Viktor & Rolf's dress/off shoulder shirt/tunic. And this reminded me a lot about Plato's realm of ideal forms.

Is this a shoe?

Plato questioned what made say a shoe, a shoe? What would it mean to claim that something is a shoe? At first you might say well it is something that you wear to walk in that covers and protects the foot, but what if a shoe does not provide protection? What if a shoe is made that is never worn or walked in? What if a shoe does not cover the entire foot, but only bits or pieces? Exactly what is the essence of a shoe?

How about this?

Plato argued that there exists a perfect form of shoe and every other entity imaginable called their ideal form. They are unchangeable, ideal, and consistent forms of everything in this ever-changing and temporary world of ours merely emulates with imperfect copies. We can never come to know these ideal, true forms directly, but we come to understand them. Thus, shoes in our everyday lives are considered shoes because they partake of these ideal forms. Abstract concepts such as justice and beauty also have their ideal forms according to Plato.

Or this?

So while say a toeless shoe may not be considered exactly a shoe, we know that if it is any entity it is a shoe because it shares some commonalities with a shoe's ideal form. But what exactly can we say when it comes to the melting pot fashions of Viktor & Rolf or Phillip Lim? It's an interesting thought to ponder...

Keira Knightley has come out of hibernation this past month to promote her 'Never Let Me Go' film with her co-star Carey Mulligan around London, England. It's excellent to see her making the rounds because firstly, I just love her feisty spirit (screw you Mr. Darcy!). Secondly, she is one of Karl's muses and I happen to love anything Chanel so through deductive reasoning you should be able to figure that one out :)

P.S I think Carey's style is beginning to grow on me. At first she was sort of plain jane for me and reminded me of Michelle Williams too much, but the Vionnet look does things for me.

Runway designers are often inspired by celebrities and some have been known to design entire collections around a particularly innovative and fashionable celeb. The Olsen twins have been one of these influencers before and I believe that they have done it again, only this time it's just one particular garment and just one Olsen twin.

Typically it's Mary-kate who selects kooky looks to traipse around NY in, but every now and then Ashley wears some outlandish fur coat or in this instance, PJs. I never thought I would be an advocate for this look, but dammit I am. It's sort of grandma chic and when you're in your twenties, grandma chic is cool in an ironic no-other-age-group-including-grandmas-could-pull-this-look-off kind of way (yay hyphens).

I think I will try this look out, but just to make sure everyone is clear on the fact that I am at the forefront of a very avante guard trend I will wear heels. I wouldn't want people thinking I am one of those lazy high school students that can't be bothered to change in the morning, now would I?

Fashion is the true “in the eye of the beholder” classifier. At least, fashion is more so than beauty. Think about it. What you consider fashionable may be wretched, poor taste, or just plain boring to whomever happens to be sitting next to you in the break room. Fashion is able self-expression, and adopting designer trends you can fully identify with.

On the other hand beauty, despite many misconceptions and urban folklore, is much less subjective than we like to preach. Many a Reassurer has been heard spouting the phrase: “Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder.” In many classes I have sat through, I’ve heard professors speaking of beauty being perceived differently across cultures. Yet when it comes down to actual research studies based on empirical data, beauty is standardizable cross culturally. In said studies, beauty is measurable and quantifiable by criteria such as spatial averages, bilateral symmetry, and large differences between a female look and a male look. And results were produced time and time again, pointing to what most mothers want to protect their children from hearing: beauty is objectifiably measurable, across cultures; people across the world tend to agree on what is considered beautiful.

At the same time, these studies involved two dimensional pictures of faces- not face-to-face with live subjects. Therefore, these studies do not account for such factors as intrinsic beauty. Still, the phrase “Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder” indicates that from one person to the next, views of what is beautiful cannot be agreed upon and that is simply not the case. Beauty, even intrinsic beauty, is easily agreed upon, even amongst members of different cultures. Traits like a pleasant demeanor, altruism, and …all make a person more attractive, so to speak.

Take the “Halo Effect” for example. This phenomenon is not only used to describe behavior in the classroom, nor making a good impression when meeting someone for the first time. Unfortunately we as the human race tend to assign a “halo” to those who are more attractive, reportedly. Is this to that individuals’ advantage or disadvantage? Surely higher expectations could have many disadvantages.

Fashion, on the other hand, may indeed be better judged in the eye of the beholder. Not all fashions are flattering, yet many fashions are adopted and loved because they are “hot” …Is fashionable the same thing as Beautiful? I say neigh. Does fashion have the potential to create some version of the Halo Effect aforementioned? I say yes, but it is a much more specific phenomenons. Fashionable trend perceptions will depend on the crowd, the surrounding culture, environment, and even outdoor weather for the day.

Apparently Vogue isn't the only magazine that can pull off a whimsical fairy-tale shoot. All of these characters look vaguely familiar, but are said to be created for this shoot specifically. I am reminded of Emma Watson's Harry Potter character above and the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. If he only had a heart...er...mouse trap.

This is one crazy creative shoot. If you ever wondered what happened to haute couture after it walked down a runway for 50 seconds, this is your answer. It gets used for wacky editorials and then retires in some rich lady's collection of never-to-be-worn priceless frocks. On occasion children wear them too. And now for a few words from the photographer himself:

"Katie Fogarty stars in the fabulous, ferociously funny, freaky film “The 7 Tales of Katie in Kinderland” as the wonderfully witty “Wizard of Westergarten” in the County of Cormilligan (Try saying that after a few drinks)."

If you happen to live in a city where weather transitions are a smooth and enjoyable affair, you have the luxury of extending the life of summer pieces in your wardrobe. The shortest of shorts and sheerest of blouses may even be spared. It's all due to one simple styling tactic: layering.

Socks, leggings, nylons, scarves, cardigans, jackets, hats etc...simply pick a few additional items from your wardrobe and throw them over top (or underneath) your summeresque look and voilà you are saved from autumn breezes and declining temperatures! No need to mourn the loss of your favorite summer frock.

If, however, you are gungho about jumping into fall attire, but find it too warm to commit to head-to-toe coverage, pick lighter fabrics and roll away your shirt/pants when temperatures peaks. Perhaps try cuffing your sleeves in an inverted fashion the way Karla has with her yellow blouse to keep things interesting.

Lately I've developed this really dark and shameful habit. I'm not sure if you've heard of it, but people refer to it as "shopping online". These boots are the 5th pair of shoes I have purchased online in the past 2 months. My name is Tracey, and I'm an Aldoholic. As of today I am officially imposing a self ban from all online shopping. However, there is one exception to my rule: I really, really, really want a pimp satin or velvet turban. If I find one online that is pretty and not too expensive so help me god it's mine. And in three colors.

Also, I have been feeling guilty about neglecting this blog lately. I'd like to blame it on significant life events, but really I'm just being fickle and lazy. I have always suffered from being carried away by capricious, spur-of-the-moment, inspiration-motivated frenzies combined with periodic bouts of indolence and lethargy. There is no moderation. There is no middle ground. I am productively schizophrenic. Oh well. Makes for interesting Tuesday nights.

This past Monday night I attended the Vancouver Fashion Ezine Launch Party and had the pleasure of meeting many talented photographers, stylists, models, and dreamers alike in celebration of a new up and coming local magazine. I am very excited at the possibility of working with those I met! I appear to have found a place for November and will be coordinating a move shortly. Trend Spotting: Maxi Skirts

How to Wear a Maxi Skirt

Because your lower body is swamped in free loose fabric you want to give yourself some form on the upper half. Wear a fitted top/jacket, tuck your top in, pull a waist belt over your skirt, or even show some belly in a cropped top like the girl on top above.
Unless you are wearing a floor sweeping maxi length skirt you want the bottom of the skirt to hit below the half way point of your calves (where your legs are at their narrowest).
If you are shorter you will want to skip on any heels with ankle straps as they will abrupt the eye line and therefore shorten the appearance of your legs.
For those that are under 5'5" you may want to wear platform heels or wedges of some sort to counteract any swamping effect a long skirt will have on your frame (this will in fact create the illusion that you are taller). A drooping V-neck will also help lengthen out your body.
Lastly, have fun! Maxi length skirts are dramatic and command attention so go for it. Fur vests, motorcycle jackets, gladiator heels etc...unless you are wearing a skirt with an interesting print you will be a blank slate unless you add some flair.

It's so refreshing to see a photoshoot that highlights the vibrant blue hues of water after so many black and white prints that are so prominently featured in jewelry ads. Looking at these make me wonder how a designer like David Yurman could ever choose otherwise. The golden stacked arms against the aquamarine ripples is just stunning.

I feel like Emily could be a mermaid in all the finely textured clothing. She gives really good neck doesn't she? A couple of the shots are borderline Sports Illustrated, but I quite enjoy a good Baywatch hair flip. Who doesn't really?

I love young, asian, male designers. They take off at the speed of lighting when they finally emerge from the sea of aspiring fashion designers. They're also pretty damn adorable in the fact that they get inspired by pasta like Jason Wu was for this collection. Lucky for me Jason wasn't a flop for spring like Alex below (it still hurts to say things like that). Jason and Alex are perfect character foils on the runway and in person. Jason is shy, romantic, whimsical, and obsessed with things like bows and flowers. Alex is charismatic, edgy, avante-guade, and obsessed with breaking the rules. Between the two of them they fill my needs quite perfectly.

Jason actually warned everyone before showing his collection that it was going to be "more dangerous". I'm sure Alex would giggle at such a proclamation for as you can see it is nothing short of being incandescently charming. Perhaps he was referring to the turbans? I really want to get my hands on a turban. I've been craving one since Prada did them in Spring 2007. It's also interesting how Jason Wu and other designers are really focusing on revolutionizing women's work wardrobes. Fashion is always influenced by the world and in return influencing it back. People claim that fashion has no depth, but there is no denying its societal impact. Fashion is and can be very political.

Things were starting to get really good, and I mean really really good, between Alex and I, but then like a typically man he had to go and screw things up. In an attempt to mix things up and have us all questioning if we really know the man, Alexander sent us some sort of Jedi-Tribe curve ball this past fashion week.

Designers...always trying to reinvent the wheel. I'll have you know Alex that I liked the damn wheel. The wheel was perfect the way it was.

How do I even begin reviewing this collection? It breaks my heart just to look at it...doodle prints, metallic duck tape, CAMEL TOE -these are not a few of my favorite things. I guess for starters I can quote fashion reporter Tim Blanks who had this to say: "First thing you notice: no black". The second thing you notice of course is that it's a f-ing disaster. The wool plunging and cropped sweater above looks like something you might find at your local Salvation Army. I can't believe I'm mocking Alex's work. It seems cruel and unusual....like telling your own child they're ugly.

This first look to the left looks like something you get put in for a pap smear at the doctor's office. There is just nothing wearable about this collection. It's about as appealing as the model's painted dreadlocked hair. I am being a Negative Nancy though, which I hate so I'll stop now. On the bright side Alex is becoming more confident. He's trying to find himself. At least it's not as painful to watch as Taylor Momsen. I really hope Alex returns to the darkside next season. He was so deliciously sexy and office goth last collection below.

It's okay Alex. I won't give up on your geometric genius just yet.

I have been sick for the past few days, but I managed to pull myself together for a new post today. I've been using my mother's camera which confuses me greatly. I have no idea why, but the amount of light used in flash mode varies and then I have to work with different levels of brightness/contrast in my photos. I tried to adjust them in photoshop, but they're still quite different. I feel like I have a motherly glow in the last shot haha oh well.

I always pull this Marilyn Monroe look out of my closet when I need some perking up. It's very delicate looking and it evokes the most charming solicitations and reactions from men. I get called Miss and they will go out of their way to open doors for me. The usual offensive cat calls are replaced with whistles (cat calls are those random comments/names that men shout out at women when they drive or walk by). It's interesting how we're programmed to respond to social cues with such alacrity. I enjoy taking full advantage of it. Like they say: act like a lady; make a man be a man.

This reminds me of an article I once read written by Steve Harvey. He had the most chivalrous things to say including:

"I teach my sons that they cannot get in the car until their mothers and sisters are in the car. I teach my sons that if I turn around and you are in that car and your mother and sisters are not in that car, I am crushing you because suppose something happens -- a dog attack or something -- and we are in the car and the girls are not, how can we protect them? So that can't happen."

That has got to be the sweetest thing ever. We need more men like Steve!

Fashion Freelance Writing

I'm published! Woo!!!!!!!!! I have just started writing for The Fashion Spot and I am pretty psyched about my first publication Fashion Bloggers Cashing In, which I have noticed a little late (it was published on August 30th). Andrea Grant the Managing Editor reported it was a popular article too so that makes it twice as cool to report. My full last name I am using for my freelancing, although I still want to be known as Tracey Quo professionally. I'm just tired of people looking at my last name and having to take a deep breath before stumbling awkwardly between the vowels (it's pronounced ma-core-ca-dale in case you were wondering).

I have actually been writing on the TFS forum for many years now; almost 8 to be exact. I first came across it when googling Sienna Miller to discover who this supposedly new Kate Moss was in all the tabloids. I've been a frequent poster ever since and have watched it evolve tremendously. It now has an estimated 2,056,400 monthly visits. And as a poster who has accumulated approximately 35,000 posts on their forums, I honestly believe I helped the forum's growth quite a bit when it was first developing (it was launched in 2001). It's interesting to go back and read my fashion insights as a 16 year old, like looking back on my growing obsession. TFS definitely fed it.

Anywho, woo! Yay me and all that good stuff :)

This editorial is what the men at my work call "a slam dunk" or "hitting it out of the park", which means it's done exactly how it should be done. The retro furniture, the gaudy wall paper and clashing carpet, the pin curls and fussed over nails, the lackadaisical figures thrown over luggage and suitcases looking unaccomplished and idle. Were the clothes even necessary? Probably not, but I have never been more fond of crinoline in my life.

The one thing I've noticed about Vogue Nippon is they usually have an editorial every month with the most diabolical accessorizes. This is one of the more low key instances of it, but they definitely go all sorts of mad with pastels, neons, quirky hand bags, and alarming amounts of precious gems. Not the sort of styling you see in US Vogue.

And not that I have a hate-on for US Vogue (I don't), but I just know if this were printed here instead there would be all kinds of fury for featuring 12 pages of women doing nothing but laying on their backs all perky and sexified. In all fairness, when channeling the 1950s this editorial pretty much hits the mark for what women were doing back then: answering phones or looking foxy at home.

Everyone meet my brother Dallas. He has impeccable taste for an army boy and I will take 99% credit for it (1% I will allow for his own ability to take fabulous direction). Seriously though I haven't picked out any outfits for the Master Corporal in a long time so I cannot reasonably take credit. I sometimes feel like I was his Rachel Zoe and he my Nicole Richie who I gave wings to (my ego is being featured in this post today as well apparently).

Anyway, this is my brother's latest genre of style; very business casual. Everything is fitted, tight, nipped and tucked. Quite Italian. I of course approve of the dark palette. He's also been wearing skinnies lately and not in a black-eyeliner-wearing emo kind of way. So as women's fashion ventures more and more into masculine styles, including the prominent military look this fall, men's fashion appears to be entering feminine territory. Pretty soon we'll all be confused which side of the store is men's and women's with all this gender neutral styling.

Emmanuelle Alt - Fashion Director, Vogue Paris

I have developed a serious crush on this woman. Emmanuelle Alt is a weathered fashion veteran with an impossible resume including her direction at Paris Vogue and styling for Balmain. Her husband, Franck Durand, is also the Artistic Director at Isabel Marant, a fashion line that is the epitome of Parisienne rock n' roll chic. That means she has substantial influence over 3 French fashion bibles, which means she is the embodiment of French fashion. She has also styled Michael Jackson and was blogged about by Kanye West, which is pretty damn cool too.

And now a very brief history of my new crush:

Alt was styling editorials for Mixte and 20 Ans, where she spent 5 years as Editor-in-Chief, before breathing life back in to Paris Vogue in 2001 with Carine Roitfeld. Before commencing her career in fashion she was educated at Lubeck School, which is reportedly a stylish private Catholic academy located in Paris. The agency that currently represents her freelance styling is Art Partner.

I love her personal style for so many reasons. It's very androgynous, almost borderline masculine. You will almost never see this woman in a dress. She has a serious allergy to color, remaining monochromatic for the most part. Her quiet confidence that seems an impenetrable force adds to her nuanced wardrobe. It's all very elusive and edgy with an untouchable air of sophistication (fashion editors all appear to have untouchable airs). What draws me in the most about her is her unerring eye for fit and proportion, which she shares with fashion greats like Coco Chanel. She understands the architecture of clothing and is very uncompromising in her own wardrobe about it. She is definitely a bit of a mastermind. I'd love to pick her petite French brains.

I'm in a colorless phase right now. I haven't related to color in a long time. I prefer moody and inconspicuous neutrals. Colors are too attention gaining and inviting for someone like me who often prefers to be noticed, but left alone.

I want to thank my twin for always helping me out with these photos for my blog. She ruins 50% of my shots by making me laugh, but I can't fully blame her; it is naturally difficult not to smirk when acting serious and falling over for the camera. I often feel silly, but I don't mind contorting myself for a good cause. I Can See Your Underwear

Dolce & Gabanna Fall RTW 2010

Sometimes I wonder when butt crack will be in style. I genuinely do believe the day is coming. Conservative designers will have sheer fabric across the lower back exposing cracks and the more risky ones like Dolce & Gabbana will do fish net and chains over the cheeks. Perhaps this is why I'm totally cool with what's going on above. I would even wear the dress to the right event.

So I spent the evening drinking wine and watching videos of runway collections and post-show interviews with editors and celebrities who get to call up the designers and shot gun their favorite looks for premieres. Sidenote - I love the way the French pronounce sexuality "sex-OU-al-EE-té". Why must their vowels require such forceful tongue thrusting? So much work for one silly word.

Dolce & Gabanna Fall RTW 2010

Anyways I've come to realize how much I love the way the fashion crowd speaks. It's colorful and wildly imaginative. Everything is described in abstract metamorphical terms. A dress isn't just a dress, it's a whirlwind of fascination. You don't just like the dress you want to make it a candle lit dinner and then make sweet love to it all night long on a sandy white beach (or is that just me?). This is because a dress isn't simply a dress. It is much more. Fashion makes an emotional connection with people.

Dolce & Gabbana Fall RTW 2010

Dolce & Gabanna's show above made attending tough New Yorkers CRY with some behind the scenes footage. I suppose in a cut throat industry a bit of intimacy can be moving like that. This collection is easily in my top 3 this season. It's got a little bit of everything I like in a collection. It's provocative yet lady like, it's full of contradictions and outside the box thinking, the fabrics are very luxe and beautiful, and many up and coming trends are touched upon. Good stuff!

In The Wild

My concept for this shoot was to use very soft and wearable garments in a peaceful and picturesque environment. All the clothing had a toned down bohemian vibe and included a fair amount of silk. I had an image in my head of various Greek myths that included nymphs lounging around bodies of water. In Greek mythology nymphs are all nature spirits that appear as beautiful seductive women and can cause various metamorphoses (transformations of shape, usually into plants and animals). They are typically huge teases that torment the gods like Apollo, but they also inspire beautiful poetry and songs. I think Rayna definitely captures that innocent yet devilish motif here.

Ian Harding the photographer for this shoot did an amazing job bringing all the pictures to life. I have never taken a second glance at grass in a photo before, but I definitely do in these shots! You would never know it looking at these photos, but Rayna was eaten alive at this shoot. She emerged looking like a 5 year old with a terrible case of smallpox covered head to toe in bites when we were done. We also got her to lay down on large rocks in very cold water and change into the nude often on a rather public nature trail. Modelling isn't quite as glamorous as it appears so a big thank-you to both Rayna and Ian for their hard work and helping me build my portfolio!

I actually met Ian two hours after I was laid off from my job as a recruiter. It was Alberta Fashion Week (AFW) and I was attending the runway shows that evening so I cabbed from work with all my stuff (a collection of work pumps, my sacred peanut butter I snacked on between e-mails, tooth brushes/paste, weird desk paraphanelia etc...) in my synthetic leather leggings and headed straight to a friends house to down a couple vodka-waters and head to AFW. Within those two hours I somehow came to the conclusion that I should pursue a career in the fashion industry, so I asked Ian for his business card and two months later we hooked up for this wicked shoot (Ian is a photographer for AFW). I think that's what people are referring to when they tell you to take lemons and make lemonade :)

They make me want to do things....unspeakable things...unmentionable things...terrible, terrible things that can't be forgiven....I'll just leave it at that....

"There is one thing I should specifically address about night clubbing in Italy: Italian men. During the day Italian men are a wondrous sight. They are beautiful, stylish, sexy etc… everything you could ask for in a piece of ass. They walk around in 34 degree heat in suits looking about 10 degrees cooler than everyone else. If you’re lucky enough one may say Ciao Bella to you as you proceed to watch your ego grow 2 times bigger. Italian men in night clubs, however, are another story. Creepy, hyper-aggressive, stalker-like, crazy etc… are a few words that come to mind. As the night goes on they become even bigger creepers."

Awesome Things I Can't Afford Saturdays

Another Saturday, another self depreciating post about my penniless existence. Oh joy.

An old friend of mine just launched an escort service in Vancouver that pretends to be a matchmaking service called Sugar City. It's got very interesting wording like "mutually beneficial relationship" and "Sugar babies" and my favorite "weekly allowance". Anyways I've been following their blog and I find myself becoming more and more accepting of the whole concept when shopping online for these posts. I think to myself "gee golly gosh, if I had a Sugar Daddy paying my rent and depositing me a monthly 4 digit allowance I could totally thug out my knuckles for reals yo." But alas, I will not succumb to a Sugar City kind of existence.

All I could ever think in our time together is how unfortunate it is that someone must take part in such a calculating business transaction to fill their needs. If you're in that sort of arrangement all you should really be thinking about is when the sucker will finish buying you the entire Louis Vuitton luggage collection and why the hell is your champagne taking so god damn long to arrive at your lavished hotel suite at the Hilton DAMMIT!?!

But I digress...

Why hello there metal spikes woven tightly with copper wire. How are your fabulous selves today? Oh, dangerous? Yeah, I noticed you were all hardcore like that hanging out on what is probably a deadly cliff on fingers with chipped nail polished (perfectly polished nails are for the MEEK). How am I? Oh you know....broke and totally can't afford you what-so-ever. I'm selling my shoes to fly out to my friend's wedding next month, but you know...it goes. Thanks, for asking.

Grey was not one of the bigger fall color trends this summer on the runways, but it still made several appearances, especially in knit wear (Diane Von Furstenburg was a favorite of mine) so I expect to still see grey lingering in stores soon. I've always been really fond of grey because it's neutral yet rather dynamic depending on the fabric and exact shade used. It can be soft like my dress above or edgy like my heels. It's basically moody and that strikes a chord with me being a rather moody girl.

The best thing about grey is all the fun you can have with contrasting it. It serves as the perfect back drop no matter what color you pair it with and you can be as discreet or loud as you want with your pairing. Here lighter shades of grey have been color blocked with pastel colored tops.

Rich and deep colors can add a lot of elegance to a grey article of clothing like Kate Moss' royal blue jacket above and Nicole Richie's ruby red scarf. I would suggest keeping your other accessories neutral rather than juggling several color contrasts with grey, if you want a more sophisticated look.

The greater amount of grey you are wearing the more dramatic the juxtaposition a pop of color will have against it. You can add this color through any accessory imaginable from a pair of gloves to a bow tie and pocket square.

Grey is a particularly beautiful slate to display metallics against. Try stacking your arms in gold bracelets or pile on a few chains around your neck.

If you're crazy enough about grey you can go head-to-toe in it like myself and these two ladies. I've often read it's a no-no to match two tones of the same shade because it looks off or clashes, but if you're mixing different textures as well as tones the clashing works in your favor. Kate above is wearing a blazer that is probably a rayon/polyester blend with jeans and a wool top and the fact that the greys are all different tones still works well.

I have just returned from a week long vacation in Washington with my good friend/model Rayna McKay (pictured above in The Baroness Hotel). We spent most of our time in Seattle, although we did venture into Auburn for my mother's dog show and Marysville for some hardcore outlet shopping. As you can see my hair has magically grown 10 inches and blackened. I am actually wearing a hairband wig from Paris Hilton's line of hair extensions. I bought 9" and 22" wigs for only $20 each when wandering bored in Auburn. I dyed my hair a day earlier so the coloring match was quite perfect. I used to have hair longer than this so I was pretty psyched to fake it for the day (and till whenever I dye my hair next woo!).

I am a big fan of Rayna's last outfit posted here because not only does she remind me of a gondola tour guide in Venice, but she is dressed very chic for incredibly cheap. Both her top and pants were on sale for $10 each and her belt was $20. With her shoes borrowed from me her full look is only $40. Yay end of the season sales! I don't know what I would do if it weren't for stores needing to make room for new inventory...okay, that's a lie. I would just get another credit card ha!

Fashion on Screen Part 1

When you love fashion, and I mean really, REALLY love fashion you will have moments dating back to your childhood when you fell completely in love with an ensemble. You were captured. You were mesmerized. And you have an imprint laying dormant in your memory forever that will be evoked from time to time and warm fuzzies will be had.

As a child I kept note pads so I could write down outfits that I saw on TV or in movies. When tabloids became a phenomenon, I kept scrapbooks of magazine clippings. Now as an adult I save hundreds of photos on my computer and skim through them when I need some inspiration or some of those warm fuzzies.

This posting is dedicated to some of my favorite fashion moments forever tattooed in my memory and heart.

Sex and the City

I literally squealed when Carrie turned around and revealed the bunny tail on this skirt. I believe this was the first episode of SATC I ever watched. I must have been about 12 years old. This outfit is still my all time favorite from this show. As much as I love all the couture and extravagance SATC evolved into, the more down-to-earth looks with interesting quirks from the first few seasons were always my favorite. I definitely need to dedicate an entire blog post to more SATC favorites.

Rear Window

Any girl who watches Rear Window for the first time gasps when Grace Kelly, as Lisa Fremont, first makes her appearance in the above layered tulle and chiffon skirt that moves around beautifully as she begins to turn on the lights in her crippled boyfriend's apartment. You can view a clip of that memorable scene on youtube. A single strand of pearls, scrunched white gloves, open toed asymmetrical black heels, and a matching chiffon shoulder wrap together make Grace Kelly look like she could have literally walked off a page of Vogue in the 1950s.

Her green suit with a halter blouse beneath is no less of a masterpiece. Edith Head, the costume designer for this film, and many time over Oscar winner did a fantastic job with this film. I've shown Rear Window to so many people who never watch films from the 1950s and it always gets a great reception and a large part of it is the magnificent wardrobe.

The Devil Wears Prada

This movie was just too overwhelming to watch in theaters. There was so much to look at and so little screen time for each outfit. The scene where Miranda throws her coat and purse on Andy's desk repetitively in a week long sequence was TORTURE. I remember shouting out "NO, NO, I NEED MORE TIME!" at the theater screen. Although I was able to find plenty of stills for Anne Hathaway's wardrobe many of my favorites I could not find, such as the Chanelesque school girl look so I compromised and collaged some screen caps below.

Overall, I think I preferred Emily Blunt's wardrobe, which was dominated by dark shades with lots of edgy layering, boots, and waist belts. I imagine my wardrobe would resemble hers if I had thousands of dollars at my disposal.

I didn't expect to post so many photos of this film, but I got a little carried away. Next post will feature selections from 3 more movies whose fashions I have endlessly enjoyed.

Layout Change

I was going to learn how to put in a new blog title that would allow me to move it to the bottom center or somewhere other than the top left, but I'm tired. HMTL text/coding is not my area of expertise. The gray/orange scheme was starting to annoy me though. I think this is easier on the eyes too. I hope everyone agrees it's an improvement :)

So this is what it feels like when doves cry.

This jacket was made for me and we will simply never be. It's like unrequited love, except so much more tragic. Although I have only been pining after this jacket for a couple of hours it feels like an ETERNITY. I want it with every ounce of my being. Just looking at it warms the cockles of my materialistic heart. But enough of about me and my growing desire, let's talk about this gorgeous, unholy jacket.

I really love it when a designer can take something classic and make it elegant by just adding some feminine detailing like using puffed sleeves, engraved silver buttons, and pink linen on a traditional blazer. If you can take that now feminine blazer and give it some edge with tan suede paneling, scrunched sleeves, two vents in the back, and a third flap pocket you are nothing short of a tailoring genius AND my personal hero.

Smythe is a Toronto-based, Canadian label run by designers Andrea Lenczner and Christie Smythe who design tailored jackets that are meant to be nostalgic and wearable. They have only been selling jackets since 2004, but are already a world wide success and a favorite for many celebrities. Kate Hudson owns the above jacket in Robin's Egg Blue (I prefer the pink, but I'm a princess so...). If this pink jacket were my baby I would wear it with some fierce cut off shorts or even some tapper shorts. The tailored jeans above are a bit too vanilla for me. *returns to dreaming*

This summer for the first time ever I took a second glimpse at Aldo's print advertisements in various magazines. The styling, photography, and art direction all struck a cord with me. It was so vibrant, playful, happy, and down right fun. It made me smile a little inside and like any good ad campaign it made me want to shop. Canadian model Jessica Stam is a huge favorite of mine so that probably had something to do with it.

I just recently found out that perverted camera man Terry Richardson was the photographer for the campaign, which explains a lot. For some reason I always notice this man's work. If I am skimming through a magazine and I see an editorial or ad campaign shot by him I actually take note of it and feel strangely compelled. I think it's a combination of his twisted humor and pornographic aesthetic (his colleagues seem to prefer the term provocative...whatever). It's also largely the simplicity and down-to-earth concept his shooting embodies.

Terry is clearly a charismatic man, as he can get most models to do naughty things they wouldn't with other photographers, so the model really becomes the focal point in his pictures rather than some elaborate Vogue-like production. It's too bad he's a creepy sexual harassment law suit waiting to happen because I believe he can bring out the potential in models like few can.

I haven't been able to find out who the wardrobe stylist was for these shoots, but I love how each shoe got its own decade specific styling, from the 80's Madonna black tutu look to the 50s pin-up spotted cardigan. It's all very fun, which is exactly how I think fashion should be. You can view video of the Spring/Summer shoot here. Although both Terry and Jessica were brought back for the fall campaign Boyd Holbrook was replaced with Mat Gordon. Too bad. I really liked Boyd's charm.

A Tribute to Chanel

Today's posting is one of sweet, sweet nostalgia. I know there isn't a girl out there who doesn't coo and get all doe eyed talking about Coco Chanel, but I really do have a soft spot for the tenacious and feisty spirit behind our obsessions with leather quilted shoulder bags and tweed bouclé suits.

I recently tried to rent a biographical movie starring Audrey Tatou called Coco before Chanel and ended up with the wrong version, which I never finished because I'm ADD and I just don't finish anything. I like to blame that quality on my Myers Briggs personality type, INFP. I tell people the acronym stands for "I Never Finish Projects" when they ask (they usually don't).

I did, however, finish a very cheeky and delightful Chanel book titled The Gospel According to Coco Chanel by Karen Karbo that I highly recommend. The book delves into her checkered past, which no one can ever be sure of because she was always coming up with new contradicting stories about her roots (the author refers to these tales as Chanelores).

It's not that she was particularly scandalous, it's just that she was raised in an orphanage where she was abandoned by her father. Being someone who hung out with high society Frenchmen like Pablo Picasso, that was about as defamatory as you could get. It was bad enough she started out as a lowly hat maker (seamstresses had no status back then, and even as a famous designer Chanel's celebrity clients would pretend not to see her as they passed her on the streets).

Aside from all her clever proverbs, which have now become clichés, such as

“A woman is closest to being naked when she is well dressed”

“Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions.”

I would say the lessons I have enjoyed most from Ms. Chanel are that perseverance and personal conviction when combined are deadly and unstoppable, and that horse riding never ceases to impress men (seriously).

Awesome Things I Can't Afford Saturdays

Last week I couldn't afford golden finger tips. This week I can't afford to be gripped by death. I could probably have scrimped and saved last week for my coveted item, but this week I really can't afford it. Not now. Not ever. It's $3,684 approximately. You don't even get to know what it will cost you exactly. Pricey shit is elusive like that. When you see it in magazines they don't even bother giving you the estimate, they just say "Dial blah blah blah to inquire". So what's the best thing about this magnificently creepy belt by jewels and accessory designer Delfina Delettrez? It's named after this guy. Yes, that's right. Skeletor.

Not The Grim Reaper, not even the long and slender Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas, but yellow skulled, muscular, and bright blue Skeletor. How in the hell does a couture piece get called Skeletor Belt? Would CoutureLab, the online luxury and lifestyle company who contracted Delettrez, accept a Eric Cartmen inspired tuque or Cobra Commander gloves? I thought the fashion community didn't have a sense of humor and that's why we praise Lady Gaga in best dressed lists instead of laughing at her really, really hard. Regardless of my confusion this belt is sexy and glamorous and I want to wear it on a date with He-Man to Castle Grayskull (just to make Skeletor jealous of course).

Oh, how I would love to have sterling silver fingers interlocking around my waist for once, instead of one of those pesky homo sapiens' flesh n' bones fingers. Sadly, I am just a new been-a-broke-student-all-my-life graduate and precious stones on my hips are just not what the future holds for me. If you can afford this belt you can find it at CoutureLab, oh and...I hate you.

Fashion Fun in my Backyard

Because I have received the best response so far from my previous streetstyle post, and I really want this blog to be successful, I am going to continue posting streetstyle pictures as regularly as possible.

Like a good West Coast girl I am wearing Wilfred pants and a bustier inspired Wilfred top. The majority of my clothing is black and from Aritzia if you hadn't guessed already. Throughout high school the dominant color in my wardrobe was pink. My how times have changed. It's simply more practical for me to buy neutral colors for versatility and work. As a result, I let my accessories have all the fun.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what sort of niche I want for this blog, which is difficult after only posting for a week or so. From my site statistics I've noticed Canadians aren't nearly as interested in fashion as Americans or Europeans. Perhaps I should make my blog more decidedly Canadian and recruit more interest in what we have to offer? Any feedback and what you would like to see/read more of would be very appreciated.
